I’m currently working on restoring a staircase in the Wye Valley.
It was covered in white paint along with an unhealthy amount of gloss varnish which was holding on for dear life to the treads and risers. It had also become a putrid Trump Orange Colour.
It had to go. And it has. The orange gloss varnish not Trump! That’s Fake News.
The stairs started to breath again. Stripping was arduous but worth it. It’s all in the prep.
I then primed the parts that were to have colour. Whilst finely sanding the awkward tricky to get parts. Many random tools came into play whilst i was getting to these parts to strip. Including an old pottery Knife which worked a treat in parts!
My Client and i decided to use the Little Greene ‘Livid’. One of their oil based paints which i did my stairs in four years ago and are still in great condition.
They are now at the stage of needing a good fine sand and top coat to green. Then to tone the wood into the clients newly laid herringbone oak flooring. I’ll keep you posted and show you the finished product. They are certainly a process!
This end of the stair case is yet to be stripped but i cant wait to strip the top right curve back to bare wood. It will really bring it all together beautifully. I’m getting there.
